The importance of Scotland’s Census Day for Veterans

Chris Hughes, Executive Chair, Veterans Scotland appeals to Armed Forces community to complete the Scotland's Census.

Sunday 20th March is Scotland’s Census Day and for the first time in its 100-year history, a question on military service will be included.  The significance of this for our sector cannot be overstated.  The scale of the insight this will offer will have a transformative effect on the way in which services for our Armed Forces community are shaped and delivered in the years ahead.

Given the significance of this, I am writing to ask for your support in encouraging everyone in the Armed Forces community to complete the Census, and to be aware of the veterans question in particular.

Scotland’s Census website has a free to access stakeholder toolkit where you can download various assets for use on social media.  Below are some key messages you may wish to consider incorporating into any communications you issue:

  1. The addition of a "veterans" question will transform the way in which future provision of services is shaped and delivered by national and local governments, statutory services and other charities.
  2. Remember you're a veteran and be sure to answer the veterans question accurately. Whether you did National Service in the 1950s, saw active duty more recently or whether you served in a regular or reserve capacity, please tick “yes” to the veterans question.
  3. By completing the census it will allow us to hold national and local governments to account for upholding their commitments to the Armed Forces Covenant
  4. You cannot be identified in the statistics published from the Census and all personal information provided is protected by law.

The addition of a veterans question has come from a five year campaign by Poppyscotland and the Royal British Legion, but this has always been about effecting a change that would benefit the entire sector.  I would therefore urge you to lend your support in any way you can.

If you would like any further assistance or guidance please get in touch with Ross Thomson, Public Affairs and Campaigns Manager at Poppyscotland via r.thomson@poppyscotland.org.uk.
