This week Erskine Veterans at The Erskine Home in Bishopton kicked off the Sporting Senior Games. The Games will be held in various locations over a two week period culminating in a glittering award ceremony on 1st October - Older Peoples Day.
Two teams of six competed in the sports of; boccia bowls; javelin; golf and basketball. The residents taking part couldn't wait to get started.
Many hours have been devoted to practising the sports for which individual Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded. However in the true spirit of sporting camaraderie no one will go home empty handed with rosettes being awarded to every competitor. The overall team winners will receive the ultimate accolade – the John Bowman Trophy - named after the inspirational Erskine Veteran who loved competing at the Games.
Erskine’s Head Physiotherapist Janet Leith said: “This year’s theme is “Picking up the Baton” as we re-energise our physical activities with the return of our Sporting Senior Games 2021. Like many events in 2020 the pandemic caused the cancellation of our popular Games. Previous competitors are holding their individual events at their own venues with Janet Leith –Erskine Head of Physio and Craig Berry Activities co-ordinator attending each event as umpires and judges! We expect fierce competition for the John Bowman Trophy and this will be awarded with our trademark medals and rosettes at the Award Ceremony at the Glynhill Hotel on 1st October 2021 – Older Peoples Day. The Games this year are all about recovery from the pandemic and moving forward to 2022 to the Commonwealth Year.”
