Erskine Nurse Receives Inaugural Scholarship

Erskine Veterans Charity nurse receives inaugural social care scholarship from Queen Margaret University

A long-serving Erskine Veterans Charity nurse has been awarded the inaugural Jan Dewing Scholarship from Queen Margaret University (QMU).

Veronica Dormer, the manager at the charity’s Erskine Park Home in Renfrewshire was selected by QMU to work on her chosen project, “The Role of the Care Home Manager in Creating Person-centred Culture”.

The scholarship has been introduced to commemorate Professor Jan Dewing’s commitment to person-centred practice and supporting the development of others in the sector. It aims to celebrate the achievements of an individual nurse who has significantly contributed to the advancement of the practice, by offering support and continued development through an award of £1,000.

Professor Dewing was a leading scholar, with a particular focus on care services for people living with dementia. She died in 2022, aged 61. Applications for her scholarship are invited from nurses across the UK.

Veronica said: “I am delighted to have been selected by the University to receive the Jan Dewing Scholarship. The work of Professor Dewing has served as an inspiration to many in the social care sector, so to receive this inaugural award is an honour. The scholarship will provide me with an amazing development opportunity and will allow me to carry out a project which I hope will be of benefit to many for years to come.”

Derek Barron, Director of Care for Erskine, said: “This is a brilliant achievement for Veronica and reflects well on social care nursing. Throughout her time with Erskine, Veronica has demonstrated daily how much person-centred care means to her not only professionally but personally. We are thrilled she has been chosen to receive this award which is testament to her dedication to creating a better life for those being cared for with the social care sector.”
