Erskine "Support at Home" pilot launch

Erskine Veterans Charity launches "Support at Home" pilot on Armed Forces Day

Scotland’s foremost Veterans charity, Erskine, will mark this year’s Armed Forces Day with the launch of a new Support at Home pilot, aimed at expanding the care package offered to Veterans throughout Scotland.

Erskine aims to support Veterans living in the Community, initially within the Renfrewshire and Inverclyde areas, by bringing assistance directly to Veterans in their own homes.

This new initiative will offer support such as: someone to talk to, help around the home, assistance with errands and shopping, escorted trips for activities, and help getting to appointments.

One such person is Royal Navy Veteran John Graham (95), who has made his home in the Assisted Living accommodation within the charity’s Veterans Village.

John said: “I put my name down for the pilot because having someone pop in even just for a chat is something to look forward to. It’s even better if they can come with me for a coffee. I appreciate the help and company. It makes a big difference to my day, knowing there’s someone who cares and can assist with little things that might be challenging for me.

“The companionship is invaluable, especially for someone like me who has seen a lot in life and sometimes just needs someone to share stories with. I find it very helpful to have assistance with tasks that I find difficult, such as shopping or getting to appointments. This kind of support will help me maintain my independence and stay connected with the community. It’s comforting to know that Erskine is there to support us in such a meaningful way.”

Erskine CEO Wing Commander Ian Cumming emphasises the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of Veterans' care.

He said: "Our commitment to providing the best possible support for the Veterans community in Scotland, remains unwavering.

"We know from talking to our residents and their families, that many were receiving care at home services before they moved into our nursing homes. This initial pilot in Renfrewshire and Inverclyde, will help us project Erskine’s renowned support into Veterans’ own homes. We intend to complement existing care at home provision, but with our staff really having the time to help deliver meaningful, bespoke assistance which enhances each Veteran’s quality of life, dignity, and independence. We’d like to help them live well, for longer at home, amongst their own family, friends and community. If the pilot is a success, Erskine’s Board of Trustees will consider steps to upscale the service and deliver to Veterans across Scotland.

“Armed Forces Day is a significant occasion for us to launch this pilot, as it allows us to not only honour the sacrifices and contributions of our Veterans, but to actively improve their quality of life. Reaching, consulting and supporting the Veterans community is crucial for us serving those who have served our country, and ensuring we deliver on our motto: Futures for The Brave.”

Erskine has a long-standing reputation for its dedication to providing high-quality care and support to Veterans. As Scotland’s foremost provider of care for Veterans and their spouses, the charity provides unrivalled nursing, residential and dementia care in care homes throughout Scotland. Erskine also assists younger Veterans who need help to begin the next chapter of their lives, offering social, recreation and training facilities.

The Veterans Village in Bishopton has 44 cottages for Veterans and their families as well as five Assisted Living Apartments and 23 Transitional Supported Accommodation Apartments - supporting Veterans of all ages.

The expansion of services to include Care at Home reflects the organisation's commitment to evolving with the changing needs of the Veteran community.  This follows plans for the creation of a new Erskine Veterans Activity Centre (EVAC) in Forres, due to open in late October.
