Erskine crowns sports champions following successful 2023 Sporting Senior Games
Veterans vied for silverware success as Scotland’s leading Veterans’ charity, Erskine hosted the 2023 Sporting Senior Games at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Teams from care homes across Scotland took part in the competition, with a raft of medals and the coveted John Bowman Trophy, named after an inspirational Erskine Veteran and awarded to the best performing team, up for grabs.
Erskine teams were joined by residents from care homes in East Ayrshire, West Lothian, Ayr, Coatbridge and Bishopton.
Every point was a prisoner as Veterans of all ages took part in several sports, including basketball, 10 pin bowling, curling, boccia bowls, and javelin.
Following the competition, each home attended the highly anticipated awards ceremony at the Glynhill Hotel, Renfrew. Over 100 of the competitors were in attendance to find out if they were to be crowned with gold, silver, or bronze.
Awarding the medals were two very special guests from Bowls Scotland, Commonwealth Para Gold Medallists Garry Brown and Pauline Wilson. The winner of the prestigious John Bowman Trophy was announced, and presented to the winning team, Erskine Park Home by Mr Ian Bowman.
Organisers and hosts, former head physio at Erskine Veterans Charity, Janet Leith, and Professor Dawn Skelton from Glasgow Caledonian University commented on the team spirit and many smiles on show.
Chief Executive Ian Cumming said: “Erskine’s Sporting Senior Games are a fantastic initiative, which involves the entire Erskine community, as well as our other friends from across the care community. As a Veteran, I have witnessed first-hand the life-changing effect that Erskine has on the lives of our nation’s Armed Forces community, and events like these are truly inspirational. I would like to congratulate all our worthy winners.”
