Erskine Veterans Charity welcomes return of Allotments

Allotments Return to The Erskine Estate

A piece of unused land within the Erskine Veterans Village has been transformed by members of the Erskine Reid Macewen Activity Centre, volunteers, funders, and staff into the newly opened ERMAC Allotments.

For two years hours and hours of work have gone into transforming the vacant piece of ground into an area where those who love their gardening can work on a variety of projects made possible by poly tunnels, a greenhouse, compost bins and a selection of raised flower beds.

And for those who prefer not to get their hands dirty the area provides comfortable garden furniture from which to watch the labours of the many green fingered gardeners.

Thanks to generous donations from RSEA, B&Q Foundation, Broughton Charitable Trust, BAE Systems, Greenhall Foundation and Neighbourly the allotments have been fully kitted out and are ready to be used.

In addition to the generous donations a raft of volunteers from Edrington, Thermo Fisher and Govan Fire Service have given freely of their time to ensure the jobs of moving soil and painting raised flower beds were done in time for the grand opening.

Ian Cumming, Erskine CEO said “This brilliant project, led by ERMAC Gardening tutor Pamela, has involved many ERMAC members contributing to the planning and design of the repurposed land and has resulted in an area reminiscent of the allotments that existed on the Estate nearly 100 years ago. And as in years gone by it will be Erskine Veterans who will maintain the allotments. We look forward to watching the area develop and flourish under the watchful eyes of our Veterans.”

The gardens are now open to all residents and families living in the Erskine Veterans Village and of course any Veteran who would like to join our small band of gardeners in keeping the allotments in tip top condition.
